Customer Questions About Land Clearing in OR

Not inside Eugene city limits, where burning yard debris is off the table year-round, no matter how big your lot is. In the Eugene Urban Growth Boundary, you'll need at least 2 acres, and in Springfield, its Urban Growth Boundary requires at least half an acre. Even then, you can only burn during the spring and fall seasons when the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency's daily advisory gives the OK, so many landowners find it much easier to chip or drop debris at a local yard waste site.

You might need two, one for the trees and one for erosion. On private lots of 20,000 square feet or more, you'll need a permit to fell more than five trees in 12 months. Eugene also requires an erosion prevention permit when you disturb an acre or more, or 500 square feet or more in a sensitive area, such as a steep slope or ground that drains toward a creek, so it's worth checking with the city before the first skid steer rolls in.

A small backyard overrun with Himalayan blackberries and a few scrubby trees can wrap up in a day or two. Bigger acreage with mature timber, lots of stumps, and heavy hauling can take a week or more. Access, weather, and the amount of material that has to leave the site all shape the timeline.

Late spring through early fall usually works best, since dry ground supports heavy equipment and minimizes mud and erosion. Summer comes with a catch because Oregon's fire season can limit chainsaw and equipment use on and near forestland during hot, dry stretches. You can clear land in winter, but Willamette Valley rain turns a worksite soupy fast, and crews often need extra erosion controls.

Brush removal targets the smaller stuff, like overgrown shrubs, blackberry brambles, saplings, and weeds that make a yard feel like a jungle. Land clearing goes beyond clearing brush. It involves removing full-size trees, stumps, and roots to prepare a lot for building, farming, or a new landscaping plan. Lots of projects combine the two, starting with the brush and working up to the heavy lifting.
